Want to be on or off the mailing list? Click here. What is PDP?The Penny Dreadful Players is a student theater organization at the University of Illinois. PDP was founded in the Fall of 1992 by a group of non-theatre majors who wished to increase the performance opportunities available to students and community members. Since then, we have grown to almost 20 members joined together by our mutual love for theatre. We are dedicated to providing opportunities for individuals interested in any aspect of the production process, and allow people the chance not only to act, but also to produce, direct, stage manage, or design. Our mission statement codifies our dedication to the production of original works, which had not been an option for most student playwrights, and has become an ongoing goal of our organization. In addition, our support for the entire spectrum of creative expression includes Potted Meat, a sketch comedy group. Finally, our production of established works to complement our original pieces has included a number of well-known dramas and musicals. Because we feel that all of the hard work of our volunteers should be recognized, at the completion of each school year, the Penny Dreadful Players present the "Pennys", awards given to honor the most outstanding performances and accomplishments of the past year. For more information, contact our president, Jenn Forestiere (forestie@uiuc.edu) or visit our cubicle at the Student Organization Complex (Room 280, Cubicle 15) on the second floor of the Illini Union. You can also sign up for our mailing list.

| The term Penny Dreadful originally referred to inexpensive collections of stories popular in England during the late 19th century. As the name implies, most of these stories were of poor quality, but occasionally a masterpiece would emerge from among them. As a student theatre company, our aim is to uncover potential masterpieces and bring them to the stage. It is the mission of the Penny Dreadful Players to provide quality theatre to the campus and community at large and to provide an outlet for original works by student playwrights. |
